Acoustic & Dining by Depapepe

As requested by my dear friend Christopher Yap, he asked to review on Depapepe's album titiled Acoustic and Dining. I am appalled and intrigued at the same time due to the fact that the last HMV store had decided to end their business at 313 Ochard 2-3 month back. Appalled because that's the only place that one can find a depapepe's album in Singapore. None of these great music is ever, never coming on shore. Nevermind that you can order online with rapid fast shipment, the concern here would be the little egoic singaporeans never will see the light for Art or Music for the matter. The Dynamic Duo had conquered South East Asia with god's speed except Singapore. Sympathically, i am just intrigued at what obnoxious behaviour my countrymen had to offer. We are like hay grass, sway at the influence of a strong wind, the influence of other's culture, we are never cultured people, poignantly. MInd you, you could argue the same principle against myself, but that's another story. I say to my brother Yap and brother Raymond, " bros, there is no market here. There is simply no market here."

Now let's shift my attention to the album, Chris had wanted a full review on individual tracks, however i think i will probably run out of adjectives for descriptions. For this review, i will just focus on two fundamental aspects that are typical in Depapepe's songs. First would be the spiritual element, the uplifting of one's spirits when you just float on air by just listening to the tunes. Oh by the way, Depapepe are an instrumental guitar duet group from Japan. By that, i dont just mean 2 guys strumming guitar only, we will get to the technical aspect on the second.

There comes a moment when you are attracted to a kind of tune that lift your whole body, make your head lighter from the stress work contribute. The unjust one felt from society, or just simply everyday noise that in one way or another creates tons of distraction away from the things you love. It felt this way when you are embrace by the songs, you forget your worries and at this moment. You are on a rocket ship, deep in space, without gravity. Once, you felt blood clots in your body, hypertension, hyperventillation, asphyxiation. You get relief, cure, somehow a palliative process just by one function, listening. With that come peace, that's how powerful Depapepe's music is. It is able to shift your focus, from the crowded orchard road back to nigara falls, from the sardine's pack MRT stations to tranquality. Uplifting, and in-spirit to charge your batteries for another day. And if you are lucky like myself, your mind creates an unfathomable images of the wonders of the world when you press the play button.

There comes another moment, when my fellow countrymen would have to discard the commodity charged pop culture and fell in love with pure artistry(i hope soon). The chemistry of Depapepe is so contagious and intricate that many are following their progress. Watching the duo live is eye popping; one would play chords while the other rip on riffs and in an instant, it is switch around with perfect timing in Unison. Non-related in blood kinship, but plays as if they are Siamese twins. Audacious technique, crafted rhythm, brilliant composers and the ability to connect with the audience. It's even more astonishing when they can't really speak english. Quality musical notes are palpable in nature, soothing in form. And when combine together, the magic comes in multi-facet dimenson. It is a daunting task that my fingers are in pain while playing the instrument, but i love every minute of it.

till another day,
Nate

You love CATs and you like running part 2

The video in part 2 talks about the technology for performance running; adaptive running.PUMA Mobium Elite is a performance trainer that expands and contracts as the foot moves. Rooted in anatomy and inspired by nature, PUMA Mobium Elite is the product of two years intense design and development based on how the foot moves.  Considering that the foot expands in three directions, longitudinally, laterally and vertically, PUMA's innovative footwear adapts with the body in motion, encouraging a more natural and efficient mid-foot strike.

Louis Joseph, Director Strategy and Innovation discusses the technological innovation behind PUMA Mobium:  "PUMA's sport innovations have always focused on provocative, risk-taking ideas aimed at enhancing the athlete experience.  In the case of the Mobium Elite, PUMA has combined performance research with imagination to produce an entirely new class of running footwear. Developed with the vision of creating dynamic products that move with the human body in motion, the Mobium Elite represents the premier model within PUMA's new Adaptive Running collection.  Designed to expand and contract with the foot's changing shape during the gait cycle, the Mobium Elite is a first generation concept built to challenge the conventional standard of static footwear construction. Incorporating a host of patent pending technologies, we are excited by the prospects of the Mobium Elite trainer and believe that Adaptive Running is a breakthrough proposition with transformational potential."

PUMA Mobium Elite's Mobium Band is constructed to enhance the foot's natural spring.  Running through the outsole in a "figure eight" it's designed to work dynamically like the tendons in the foot.  The more force applied, the more spring it returns. Runners check them out.

You love CATs and you like running?

Puma latest running shoes design based on the fundamental dynamics of a cat's paw. The ultimate runner in the animal kingdom. The specialist with retractable blades. If you like cats, you will fall in love with the Mobium Elite by Puma.

Run for life Brooks Mach 13 Spikeless

These shoes are the spikeless version. Ultra light, Ultra minimalistic which provides amazing fit and performance. The Mach 13 provides exceptional traction. It's for neutral pronating feet and personally i felt it's for intervals training and sprint actions at stadium tracks however Brooks mentioned that they are for trail blaze running. I felt that a 3km - 5km short distance run would be more appropriate. The overall built and design is fabulous, i would use them for training the un-use sprinting muscles on the calves and the quadriceps for endurance enhancement. So grab them while they last, the speed dragon. And, yes, you’d better be fast to rock these kicks.
Recommend for:
Neutral Feet
Minimalistic running
bold design, bright colors
Light weight, breathable

PS. i attached a cool motivation picture for running for life!

Success : A simple life well lived

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of
intelligent people and affection of children; to learn the
appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of
false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in
others; to leave the world a little bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social
condition; to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

Bang for Bucks:
If you would like to turn your first/ second gen LCD Tvs into a Smart Tv at a low cost. This is it! The device at low cost and packs a punch. The Minix Neo G4 is a mini PC, a fully functional computer. Why waste $500 bucks or 1k if your needs are only for surfing net and playing simple games. Turn your 32 inch TV into a full functional interactive media player.

The Minix comes only with one USB port, but that is no problem as long as you get a powered USB hub. Minix uses the Android operating system. Folks who have Android phones will be right at home navigating around and using apps, etc. You can surf the net, download apps, watch tv, play games and perhaps do your spreadsheet all at the same time.

For USD $70 (Amazon) it draws much less power compare to a T Rex Desktop. It uses an operating system that you are already comfortable with.( at this technological age, any OS is no longer complicated, remember DOS) and let you use your existing smartphone apps, and yet has the advantage of a full size screen and keyboard. Nuff said.

Puzzle of Motivation

Scientific findings often conflict with business dealing whereas you use to think that incentives are the best form of reward to motivate employees. This is what most people think or most people believed in. Dan Pink take a closer look at the benefits of intrinsic motivation, the old ways of doing things doesn't work anymore. In local context(spore), we see this happening everywhere in any industry, on most companies. Often at times you see middle management chasing revenues on the frontline with little effect and detrimental in the long term.

The Dunce of FAS

Appalled and "Con-fuzzled" with FAS decision on the appointment of Raddy on today's New paper. I wonder if FAS has got the same foreign workers and immigration policy as the government since they are interlink with the sports council. I sympathize with Fandi Ahmad and Terry Pathmanathan as it does reflect the bureaucratic and the incompetence of the organization. In this instance meritocracy is such an overrate commodity that i find the argument to have a foreign coach compelling dumbfounded.
An admirer of Fandi for all he is skilled at and known for, he had proven his credentials exceeding expectations on the field and work hard for his coaching badges. I am not against foreign coaches with big time credentials but foreign coaches with a name like Radojko Avramovic, a name as long as to a certain Jose Murinho are difficult to accept for just winning Suzuki Cups. You bring in a highly paid substitute from overseas to alleviate the quality of local soccer, not to win Mickey Mouse cups and confuse and alienate the soccer fans with delusional "talk cock" session. Who is Radojko? who in the world of football recognize the credentials of Raddy? Before his appointment as the national coach, i have never heard nor seen him as a player nor heard of him as a famous coach in asia. Perhaps he like many foreigners just paint a superbly numerically CV showing the number of mickey mouse cup he won in SE.asia.
Let's just say even if i am proven wrong, the fact remains the same. The country don't need an expat to win Suzuki Cups and SEA game trophies, PN Savaji can do that. I wonder what kind of KPI they set in FAS, perhaps they have too many bureaucratic layers and countless of redundant meetings to attend. That's why they took so long to make a good offer to Fandi and Path. Instead they are swift to offer $35,000 to Raddy and that's for winning Tom & Jerry's cup. Could you blame them? well i can only say there is no fire without smoke. The fear of risking their reputation if the job was given to a local just show the narrow-mindedness of the organization. If accountability was as efficient, i think FAS have failed miserably over the years with the S-league and overweight foreign players. Last but not least, let me solve your problem, get PN Savaji for $10,000 and he can win you loads of Mickey Mouse Cups, at least it solve the patriotic side of things.

PS: the article was written in good spirit of nationalism and the welfare of singapore football

A guide to softshell jacket

The GO Outdoors Guide To Softshell Jackets
Softshell Jackets are designed for use outdoors as part of the layering system, and can be used alone, ideal for aerobic activity in light weather conditions if they are water repellent and highly breathable, or as an insulating layer under a 'hard shell' outer jacket.

Softshell Jackets can be worn in place of a fleece when you need more protection, and can be used in a variety of conditions. Despite most softshell jackets being weatherproofed, and able to shield you from minimal amounts of rain and wind via a DWR (Durable Water Repellent), softshell jackets are not designed for use in severe weather conditions unless theya re worn in conjunction with a hardshell, such as a waterproof jacket.

For their ability to be used in a variety of situations and environments, soft shell jackets are a cost effective purchase.

What is a Softshell Jacket and where can I wear it?

Softshell Jackets can be used in good weather on the hill or for use when you need more breathability than a hardshell waterproof.

For daily wear in moderate to good weather with little chance of rain downpours
For climbing or cycling over a baselayer instead of a fleece
In severe weather conditions as a midlayer underneath a hard shell jacket
Softshell Jackets vs Hardshell Jackets

Hard shell jackets are more rigid and waterproof, which makes them favourable for predicatble bad weather in the outdoors.

Because softshell jackets are designed to have higher levels of breathability and flexibility, whilst still offering more water and wind repelling qualities than a midlayer such as a fleece they are popular with walkers and climbers who need a close to the skin fit, with good breathability, and less weatherproofing.

The arms and body of a softshell are designed to be flexible and easy to move. An example of this is The North Face's 'Angel Wing Movement' technology, or the Berghaus Choktoi Pro Jacket, in which you can move your arms above your body without your clothing rising up during high activity.

Softshell Jackets can be created with an athletic or an alpine cut, and can be adjusted with the use of hem or drawcords so you can pull them close and keep the wind or rain out making them ideal for climbers who don't want a long cut that hinders their harness.

Softshell Jackets are easy to layer over, making them ideal for changeable weather. They also do not have a fabric construction which would cause them to 'rustle'.

Typical features of softshell jackets

Arm Venting gussets or mesh breathable areas
These are used to allow sweat to vent out of the soft shell during activity.
Hoods
Hoods are sometimes used in soft shells as extra insulation. These can be zip-off, fixed, peaked/wired, or helmet compatible
Pockets
Usually internal and external, soft shells come with a variety of pockets for all activities. For use during climbing, check they are able to be reached whilst using a harness. Pockets can also be insulated or lined to warm the hands, known as ‘hand warming/handwarmer’ pockets.
Reinforced fabrics
Typically featured ion areas such as the shoulders and elbows for durability.
Inner Fabrics
The inner of a soft shell is usually lined with a fleece, fur or wool, but can vary according to price.
Flatlock seams
Used in the stitching of some soft shells to avoid abrasion next to this skin. The seams can also be placed to avoid rubbing against rucksack straps.
Stretchy fabrics
Typically used in softshell jackets to ensure they are fit for use during activity. This can be in the garment construction, such as 4-way elastication, or the actual fabrics used.
Reflective logos
Reflective trims can be included in soft shells to provide high visibility in dark conditions.
Waterproofing a Softshell jacket

Membranes can be used in order to make your soft shell waterproof or to achieve water repellency.

GORE-Tex is a well known membrane used in clothing, and water repellency is achieved by the use of a coating in the final process of manufacturing, which is known as a DWR treatment (Durable Water Repellency.)

These membranes consist of an extremely thin film containing microscopic pores that are large enough for body moisture to pass through, but small enough to keep water droplets out, whereas DWR coatings are added to the fabric after a laminate or membrane has been applied to form a protective wall from water droplets on the outer layer.

Windproofing a Softshell Jacket

Windproof Coatings and Membranes (e.g GORE Windstopper) can also be applied to a garment to achieve windproofing.

To make a softshell windproof, they can be made with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane, known as a PTFE. This is laminated between the face fabric and the inner liner, resulting in a thicker, wind resistant fabric.

Typically, for windy conditions, manufacturers of softshell jackets also include fleece layers to counteract wind chills.
The downside of using any kind of thicker PTFE is the subsequent loss of breathability.
Most soft shells are windproof, and they typically use a membrane coating to achieve this, combined with a construction that shields the user from wind, such as toggles and drawstrings that pull the soft shell in close to the body.

Cuffs are typically ribbed to reduce the amount of open entry points for wind.

Breathability and Softshell Jackets

For active wear you should choose a soft shell with excellent levels of breathability, but for perceived bad weather, you should choose a garment with ‘good’ levels of breathability, which are likely to have thicker coatings or PU or PFTE to be more resistant to weather, but less breathable overall.
